Pacific Mtn Play-ins Begin Saturday
Colleges - Women's College

The Pacific Mountain Conference has nearly finished its women’s DI college league season; however, the region's playoff picture is taking shape. Two automatic bids have already been awarded, and during the next two weekends, two play-in seeds will be determined.

The North and East divisions received automatic bids to nationals, so Stanford (North #1) and Women’s Cougar Rugby (East #1) already know they will be contesting their Round of 16 games in Palo Alto, Calif., one of four locations around the country. They will be joined by the Southwest champion (determined by the end of the month; Texas A&M is currently leading the standings) and the PMC North play-in winner.

The latter seed will be determined this weekend in Davis, Calif. On Saturday, Chico State (North #2) will play California (North #4), while Air Force (East #3) takes on UC Davis (North #3). The Saturday winners will play each other on Sunday for the fourth spot to Palo Alto. While the four teams will be known by Sunday evening, the match-ups for the Round of 16 will not, as that information has yet to be announced.

The following weekend, March 23-24, the final play-in seed out of the conference will be determined. New Mexico will host, and two teams apiece from the South and East will be playing for a spot at the Cheswick, Pa., location of nationals.

The East teams are known - #2 New Mexico and #4 Colorado State - but the South teams won't be 100% determined until after this Saturday, the final round of league. However, UCLA and Arizona State have built enough of a points cushion to secure the South's top two spots (barring an unforeseen forfeit). The Bruins are undefeated with 35 points; ASU is 4-3 with 22 points. UC Santa Barbara sits in third with 16 points, so even if UCSB banks a bonus-point win (against UCLA) on Saturday, it won’t be enough to overcome ASU.

So, on Saturday, March 23, UCLA (South #1) will play Colorado State (East #4), and Arizona State (South #2) will see New Mexico (East #2). The winners from day one will play each other on Sunday for the bid to nationals.

Below are the final/current standings in each division, as well as the play-in match-ups for both locations:
