Texas Rugby Union U23 all-star and University of Texas captain Stephanie Flores died early Friday morning in an Overland Park, Kan. hospital.

Flores suffered a fatal injury after her head made contact with the ground during a tackle Sunday, while playing for the Texas all-stars at a tournament in Lawrence, Kan. Flores’ family and boyfriend were with her during her time in the hospital.

“On behalf of the Union, University of Texas Women’s Rugby Club, her coaches, teammates and friends, we send our deepest sympathies to her parents, family members and loved ones,” said Texas Rugby Union president David McPhail in a press release.

“Information regarding services and donations to the family will be forwarded once the family has time to make arrangements.”
