Busy Weekend in Women's College
Colleges - Women's College

It's a busy weekend in the women's college sphere this weekend. Come Sunday, the majority of the DI and DII seeds to national championships will be named. The only territories that will still be vacant are DI's Pacific Mountain Conference's sixth seed and Pacific Coast's DII entrants.

MARFU
The DI and DII colleges have been pared down to four each after last weekend’s quarterfinals. Navy put up the biggest score of the final eight with a 41-0 drubbing of Virginia Tech, while Virginia escaped with a 10-0 victory over West Chester. Maryland held onto a 12-5 win over James Madison, but UMD won’t necessarily be rewarded the victory. The Terps will face Penn State, which had a bye through the quarterfinals, in the semifinals this Saturday. Navy and Virginia will duke it out in the other semi.

MARFU receives three bids to nationals so the third place match is just as important as the final. Interestingly, the MARFU #3 seed will be in a better position than the MARFU #2 team come nationals. MARFU #2 will face Army at the national Round of 16, while MARFU #3 will play the South champion.

All of the DII quarterfinal victors defeated their opponents in convincing fashion last weekend. EPRU champion Shippensburg posted the big win, shutting out Catholic University 45-0. Temple was close behind on point differential, defeating William & Mary 42-5. Mary Washington topped St. Mary’s College 29-5 and George Washington better Delaware 34-17.

On Saturday, George Washington will take on Temple, and Shippensburg will face Mary Washington. The finalists will both play South teams at the national round of 16, while the third MARFU seed will play Midwest champion Winona.

South
Last weekend, the South contested its play-in round, where second-place teams from all three conferences joined the University of Texas for an opportunity to advance to South semis. UT crushed it, defeating Georgia 27-5 and East Carolina 52-7 in the play-in final.

Texas heads back to Alabama for the second weekend in a row to play Georgia Tech in the South semifinals, while North Carolina and Central Florida vie for a berth to the South final on Sunday. The South has two spots at nationals, so the finalists are essentially playing for seed.

Also in Mobile will be the four DII conference winners. The semifinals will see Lee University v Eckerd College and Appalachian State v College of Charleston. The South has two seeds to nationals as well.

WEST
When the Pacific Mountain Conference formed, it removed all of the DI teams competing in the West, save those in Texas. Texas formed a three-team, home-and-away Cup series, with the winner heading to the South DI play-ins (University of Texas won play-ins last weekend and will compete in the South final four), and the second-place team heading to West’s DII semifinals.

The West’s Web site has reported that “The USA Women’s College Competition Committee ruled that the Texas Rugby Union did not have a qualified Division 2 representative.” And so Eastern Rockies #2 team, Colorado Mesa, has replaced would-be DII competitor Texas A&M.

Colorado Mesa with play Great Plains’ champion Nebraska – Lincoln, while ERRFU champ Wyoming will take on Heart of America’s Truman State. The West has one seed to nationals and will play the Pacific Coast #2 team (decided on April 8) in the first round.

Pacific Mountain Conference & Pacific Coast
The Pacific Mountain Conference has determined five of its six DI seeds, and the play-ins next weekend (April 6-7). Colorado State, UC Davis, Chico State and UC Santa Barbara will all be competing for that final spot.

The Pacific Coast will contest its DII semifinals April 7-8 at Humboldt. The hosts finished atop the Northern California field and will play Pacific Northwest #2 Western Washington. UC Santa Cruz, second in Nor Cal, will play PNW champion Washington State for a berth to the final. The Pacific Coast has two seeds to nationals.
