Cal and Stanford Women Big Winners on Weekend
Colleges - Women's College

The University of California Berkeley women’s team won their opening match in the new Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference, beating UC Davis 31-10 Saturday.

The two teams were in a defensive battle early, with only a try apiece being scored in the first 40 minutes. Cal led 7-5 at the break.

In the second half Cal exposed gaps in the Davis defense. Flyhalf Maricel Quirindongo-Crespo scored two tries while hooker Jennifer Costley, No. 8 Luke Edwards, and center Anna Bischoff all touched down as well, Prop Vickie Garica kicked three conversions for the Bears.

Meanwhile also in the Pacific Mountain Conference, Stanford swept in Oregon, beating Oregon State 34-10 and the University of Oregon 43-10.

No. 8 Frances Wehrwein opened the scoring in Friday’s match and flanker Amelia Villines and center Michelle Teo also scored in the first half. Wehrwein and Villines added their second tries later on.

The game became more fractious as it wore on. OSU tried to battle back and scored twice, but scrumhalf Bisi Ibrahim zipped over to seal it 34-10.

In the second game of the weekend, Stanford faced the University of Oregon Ducks. The game flowed smoothly from the beginning. Hooker Ellen Danford, No. 8 Wehrwein, and wing Smriti Sridhar all scored early and Stanford cruised.
