Stanford was missing two of its onfield stars - Amelia Villines and Frances Wehren - who were playing for the USA Women's 7s team at the USA Women's International 7s Invitation, where the Eagles finished fifth. Villines in particular proved to be of particular interest to coach Ric Suggitt, getting a number of starts and scoring a try against Canada A in the fifth place match. Meanwhile, her found equal success in the try zone, but it took a half before the Cardinal put some distance between the 1-1-1 team. Jamie Lawrence and Bisi Ibrahim scored tries, and the team took a 10-5 lead into the half. Lawrence opened up the second half with her second try, while All American Jennifer Cooperrider, Jessica Talbert and Jamaica Osorio dotted down. "Player of the Match was prop Alex Wolens," assistant coach Heather Smith said. "She had some awesome lines of running, got us going forward, and had great leadership on the field." Other standout players included Talbert and Michelle Battle. Stanford won the B side match as well, winning 15-12, with Ellen Danford playing a solid match. The Cardinal play a big game against UC Davis next weekend, and if it's 30-10 win over Cal earlier in the season is any indication, the game should be a tough one. |

Viewing the 24,000 fans at Sam Boyd Stadium watching the USA 7s tournament in Las Vegas, one might think American rugby halted for the weekend, but parts of the country are in the middle of their league season. A huge match in women's DI college took place in Northern California between Stanford and Cal, a game that the national champion finalist battled out a 30-12 win over Cal.
