USA Women’s National Team Head Coach Katy Flores has named the side that will face Canada in their fifth place match against Canada. The selection sets the stage for a North American showdown in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The USA and Canada will square off in their fifth place match tomorrow in Guildford, England. Kickoff is 1:30 pm GMT at Surrey Sports Park. Stay with RUGBYMag.com for full reports. The USA is coming in on a high after their decisive 40-3 win over Ireland. Canada, however, won just as convincingly over Scotland. Both teams look to this final match as an opportunity to make a strong statement concerning their position in the women’s International Rugby Board (IRB) rankings. “We have the talent and commitment needed to compete on the World’s stage and have shown steady progress throughout the tournament,” said captain Ashley English, “We feel we are coming into our own, so there is no better time for us to face Canada than now.” Head coach Kathy Flores looks to have named a side designed to strike a final blow to Canada in the World Cup, with veterans and tournament standouts aplenty. Farrah Douglas and Jamie Burke will be the pillars of an imposing USA scrum as loose and tight head props. Lisa Butts will join them at hooker. Driving force from the second row will once more be generated from the powerful duo of Blaire Groefsema and Sharon Blaney. The back row comprised of blindside flanker, Kristin Zdanczewicz, Beckett Royce at openside, and number eight Mel Denham, will also remain intact to impose the physicality needed to pressure the Canadian backs into errors. Claudia Braymer will start at scrumhalf, looking to connect with flyhalf Christy Ringgenberg. Wings Nathalie Marchino and Vanesha McGee will look to put points on the board early and often, while Lynelle Kugler will strike from inside center. Amy Daniels takes the reigns at outside center, while Ashley English serves as full back. USA v CANADA |
