The top seeds in the women's 7s at Hong Kong won out, with the two expected close games being just that.
Spain was considered one of the toughest #2 seeds, and pushed the USA all the way, finally succumbing 8-5 on a late drop goal penalty by the Americans. That was a key kick, as a tie would have put Spain through on points difference.
Meanwhile, in Pool C, Australia and the Netherlands were expected to have a very tough go of it, and they did. Australia edged the Dutch 28-21. The rest of the games were essentially blowouts, with Canada and England having no difficulty in their games.
The semifinals are now set for Saturday in the main stadium in Hong Kong, with the USA taking on defending World Cup champions Australia, and Canada playing England.
There is no 3rd/4th match, so the losers just go sit in the stands.
Meanwhile, the bottom eight face off for the Plate and Bowl.
