The Eagles quietly bowed out from the World Cup Sunday, losing 28-5 to Argentina in the Plate Quarterfinals. Aside from a Zack Test try just before halftime, there wasn’t much on the positive side for the USA.
Argentina’s Javier Rojas opened scoring against a weakened American side in the fourth minute, shortly after Folau Niua was sin binned, with a try he converted himself. The Eagles were lucky to escape the power play with just one score against them, and Test’s unconverted try reeled them to back within two seconds before halftime.
However, Argentina took the final restart of the first half and capitalized on the extra time. Jeronimo de la Fuente dotted down, and Rojas converted, extending the lead to 14-5 at intermission.
A Rojas try and conversion at the onset of the second half put Argentina out three scores, effectively eliminating the Eagles. Francisco Morello scored the final try in the fifth minute of the closing stanza.
The loss brings a disappointing close to the Alex Magleby coaching era. When the Eagles take the field next for the IRB 7s World Series in October, a new skipper will be steering the ship.
Tries: Rojas (2), de la Fuente, Morello
Cons: Rojas (4)
