Shield Final Not Good for USA
Sevens - USA Sevens Men

Scotland defeated the USA 40-5 in the Shield Final at the Gold Coast 7s.

It was mostly a case of Scotland playing better than the USA completely collapsing. Both teams were beat up, and certainly the Americans looked tired, and were trying to tackle high.

This was a bad idea as the squat, fast Scottish runners, specifically James Fleming and Michael Fedo just shoved them off. Fleming was free around the outside right off the kickoff. Then Fedo exposed some poor USA tackle attempts up the middle.

Fedo got a bit of a fluke try after the Eagles failed to secure the ball out the back of a ruck, and Fedo then completed his hat trick to make it 26-0 at halftime.

The USA had not been able to secure possession, and when they did, they lost it. In the second half, more of the same, as Fleming pushed away Maka Unufe coming in too high, and then capped off his triple from a penalty.

The Eagles did get one back at the end for pride's sake. Peter Dahl - not expected to play but back in with the team stretched thin - drew the last man to put away Rocco Mauer.

But it was a disappointing end to a better Day Two for the USA.

The Eagles get two points for making the Shield Final, and are 14th after Round 1 of the HSBC World Series.
