The USA 7s tournament topped 30,000 in paid attendance Saturday as 30,112 flooded Sam Boyd Stadium to watch the action.

This is the first rugby event on American soil to draw over 30,000, and achieves the goal set forth by organizers, who are hoping for a similar crowd on Sunday.

“It’s awesome this crowd,” said USA center Mike Palefau. “I used to think Wellington and Hong Kong were the best, but this is the best tournament. They might have more fans, but here you’ve got all these fans cheering for the USA.”

“It’s great to play in front of so many home fans and friends and family,” added Peter Tiberio.

Fans have also answered the call to dress up, with large groups of fans coming in fancy dress and costumes.

The rugby, of course, has been thrilling, and the crowd has added to the atmosphere.
