This was just the latest in a string of thrilling games. Samoa came back from a 10-0 deficit to overhaul Australia, a team that had fashioned its own dramatic comeback the day before.
South Africa looked unstoppable in a tournament they might be calling their own, as they thrashed Argentina 36-0 behind the three-pronged attack of Cecil Afrika, Seabelo Senatle, and Branco du Preez.
And the day ended with New Zealand taking care of business against England 24-7, using a lot more kicking than you normally see, and getting three tries from Waisake Naholo.

In the lower brackets, the USA once again lost a nailbiter, 12-7 to Wales. They will be in the Shield semis Sunday against Uruguay.
Winning their Bowl QFs were Kenya, 24-0 over Spain, Wales, 12-7 over the USA, Scotland, 31-7 over Portugal, and Fiji, 38-14 over Uruguay.
The attendance for Saturday was another USA record for most fans at a single-day American rugby event, with 31,664 fans seeing the action, up a modest 1.4% from the Saturday crowd from 2013.
This was greeted with positivity from Tournament Director Dan Lyle, who said the early January date led organizers to believe attendance might drop a shade. Still, the total attendance for the first two days of the event is 43,711, up about 1,000 from the 2013 two-day total of 42,639 (up 2.5%).
A strong crowd on Sunday could help the event exceed 70,000 for the first time ever.
