The Grand Prix Rugby 7s Championship, according to the Home Depot Center's website, is cancelled. The event, which has been a long time in the making, was supposed to be played July 12-14 at the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy. RUGBYMag spoke with Grand Prix founder and CEO William Tatham, Jr. last month, and he said the tournament was indeed going to be played. RUGBYMag also spoke with USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville about the event, and when asked if Tatham Jr. would actually pull off the Grand Prix this summer, Melville said, "We’re hopeful that this year he’s closer than he’s ever been…We’re optimistic it will happen.” The NFL Network, which was supposed to carry the tournament, and several national rugby unions acknowledged their connections with the competition publicly. Tickets have been available for purchase online for weeks, and the Home Depot Center's website says refunds are available via the point of purchase. |
