Provo Tops at 20th Wild West
Tournaments - Tournaments

Provo swept their brackets of the 20th Annual Wild West Rugby Fest with wins in the WOmen's and Men's competitions.

The Lady Steelers defeated the Cal Pumas 12-10 in the final, while Provo took down the Tempe Old Devils 32-7.

Meanwhile Old Southwest took the men's 40+ bracket.

The Gypsies were named the Most Honored Side.

In behalf of the tournament, a donation of $2000 will be made for direct melanoma cancer research under the guidance of Dr. Lee Cranmer at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Provo used their physicality to set defenses on their heels and that succeeded in drawing defenders in.

After that, said Provo’s Dave Valeti, “we were able to find room out wide later in the games.”

Up front lock forward Solo Mounga and Mike Valeti at hooker were outstanding, while backs such as center Casey Valeti and fullback Anisi Lualua benefitted from their largesse. Flanker To'a Fakatoa  was everywhere.

Provo now looks ahead to the Las Vegas Invitational, where they traditionally kick off their spring season (www.lvirugby.com ).

“Good games and a good tournament for us,” said Valeti. “So now it's off to the track to get ready for Las Vegas.”
