Life’s high-powered offense proved too much for the Naval Academy in the second of the USA 7s CRC Cup semifinals.
In the opening moments, Ricky Neel-Freeler of Navy came up a bit too quickly and Joe Cowley seized the opportunity to streak through the opening in the Midshipmen's line. He proceeded to chip over the fullback and run onto the ball for his 8th try of the tournament. Cowley has nearly perfected the chip-and-chase, as four of his eight tries have come as the result of his boot.
Life added to their lead by capitalizing on a Naval Academy penalty. Colton Carriaga punished the Midshipmen, making a delayed dash for the goal off the tap and extending Life's lead to 12-0.
Life pulled away from Navy with a try by Jake Anderson right before the end of the first half. The entirety of the first half was played inside the Navy 22-meter line. Life used their height and weight advantage to win possession of all of their kickoffs and took the ball against the head on several of Navy’s scrums. If not for several knock-ons by Life, the score would have been more lopsided.
The second half started in similar fashion as Life gained possession of their own kickoff. After several phases, Life executed a switch perfectly and offloaded to Carriaga, who went over for his second score of the game, 24-0.
Navy finally got on the board after stringing together a series of phases to and from the sideline. They sucked the Life defense in and sent the ball wide for an easy try for Cyrus Wilson. McAuliffe added the conversion but Life maintained possession for the remainderof the match.
Life added three more tries and advanced to the final of the Championship Cup. They will take on Cal in the final at 5:29 PM EST.
