In the high school 7’s Championship Pride Rugby of Washington DC battled Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Union High School. In a very close match, Union defeated Pride by the slim margin of 12-10.
Union looked to have scored the opening try of the game in the right corner. The referee originally awarded a try but upon consultation with his side judge he changed the call to a knock on in goal. The referee crew made the correct call and overall officiated the match extremely well.
The first score came after a penalty for coming in from the side of the ruck. At the restart, Pride No. 8 Morris Ray hit a crash line at pace for an untouched try.
Union answered Pride with a try of their own. Kyel Hardrick scored in the corner making it 5-5.
Union’s Lorenzo Thomas broke a pride tackled down the left wing and dashes into the try zone making it 10-5. David Todd hit what proved to be the game winning conversion from a fairly difficult angle on the left side.
With time expiring, Pride made a last ditch effort to tie the game. Using tremendous pace Jihad Khabir streaked down the right flank beating two defenders and scoring in the corner. However, the difficult kick sailed to the right of the post leaving the game 12-10 in favor of Union
With 33 seconds left, Union received the kickoff and was able to maintain possession until time expired.
