The University of Arizona rugby program has confirmed that USA 7s player Brett Thompson will be with the Wildcats for the USA 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship to be held May 31-June 2 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
Thompson has spent the Spring semester training with the USA 7s team in Chula Vista. However, he has enrolled for the Summer Session, and is a full-time student for the summer. The Arizona summer pre-session begins classes today, May 13, and the First Summer Session begins classes June 3.
Arizona Rugby Head coach Dave Sitton said he vetted Thompson’s status with the University, USA Rugby, and the CRC, and all three came back with the ruling that, because he is enrolled as a full-time student for the summer, and the CRC is during the summer session, Thompson is a full-time student in good standing and clear to play.
The 6-3 7s forward broke out for the USA these past two weekends. Earning his first start in Glasgow, he showed well, and then in London led the team in tries for that tournament, scoring three against Australia in pool play. He showcased a high work rate, some good open-field ability, and plenty of athleticism. He will undoubtedly be a huge addition to a Wildcast 7s team that brings back all of their starters from the 2012 squad that finished second at PPL Park.
Only Peter Tiberio, who graduated, does not return, and Tiberio is on the coaching staff along with Sitton and Emil Signes. Last year’s 7s coach, Chris Kron, is consulting but unable to commit to a larger role.
