Since the official announcement of the USA Sevens Women’s College Rugby Championship (May 31-June 2, Philadelphia), important changes have occurred to the venue and team lineup.
Originally scheduled to contest pool play and the semifinals at West Chester University, which is located approximately 25 miles outside of Philadelphia, the women’s division has relocated to Drexel University’s Vidas Athletic Complex for the first two days of competition.
“Drexel hosted the event in 2011, and it was an overwhelming success,” said Joe Rosen, USA Sevens CRC Competitions Manager. “USA Sevens has no doubt that the event will be top notch again for 2013.”
The relocation is an advantageous move for the eight participating teams and their fans. Vidas Athletic Center is located just three miles from the host hotel, Courtyard Marriott, which will provide complimentary transportation to and from the airport, Drexel University and PPL Park.
In other news, Navy has dropped out of the competition due to the Midshipmen’s summer obligations; however, Boston University has stepped up to fill the void.
“The BU Women’s Rugby team could not be more enthusiastic about our participation in the CRC tournament this year,” Boston’s Alex Lawson said. “It is not only a great opportunity for us to play against some of the top teams in the nation, but it is also a true honor for us to be included among them. As we will be the only squad participating from New England, we feel obligated and motivated to train hard and represent the region with pride.”
BU will be joined by local teams Penn State, Temple and West Chester, as well as Ohio State, Georgia Tech and Texas. At present, reigning champion Army is still slated to attend, however, participation hinges on the summer availability of the West Point Cadets.
