SFGG Defeats OPSB in Seattle
Clubs - Elite Cup / RSL

In a street fight turned track meet, San Francisco Golden Gate (SFGG) got the better of divisional foe and rival Old Puget Sound Beach (OPSB) 36-27 in the opening Elite Cup match for both clubs.

Mile Pulue scored twice for SFGG. Austin Brewin photo.Led by two tries from inside center Mile Pulu, SFGG started the Elite Cup 1-0, and also recorded this victory in their Northern California DI league standings, where they are undefeated.

SFGG got off to a slow start with several basic errors in key spots to keep them from putting any points on the board. First blood came from OPSB captain and flyhalf Russell Armstrong off a SFGG penalty 3-0.

From that point, SFGG went into a different gear, getting tries from Pulu and lock Tom Rooke with one Jone Naqica conversion to jump out in front 12-3. Naqica, originally listed as a sub, ended up starting at flyhalf as Volney Rouse was a late scratch.

OPSB answered immediately off a ruck when scrumhalf Emosi Vucago juked a few defenders and found a clear path for the first of his two tries. This narrowed the deficit to 12-10 with Armstrong’s successful conversion.

Just before halftime, SFGG got the score it needed to keep clear, when outside center Samisoni Pone outpaced the OPSB defense up the sideline to give his team a 17-10 halftime lead.

In the second half, SFGG looked like a completely different team. What seemed to plague SFGG in the first half, errors in the fundamentals, seemed to be their strength in the second half. Coach Karl Thomson said it was all about limiting mistakes and playing within the confines of their game plan.

“We made a lot of fundamental errors in the first half and went away from our game plan and that’s what hurt us,” Thomson said. “We knew we had to get this team on the first tackle and limit their space and mobility.”

SFGG scored quickly after the break when Pulu plunged in for his second try, putting his side up 24-10. OPSB countered once again with Isi Daveta setting up his brother Fili Botitu in space down the sideline to get within nine points 24-15.

Then, in what was the defining moment of the game, SFGG showed some grit in putting the game away thanks to tries from No. 8 Taveta Koloamatangi and wing Jeff Colata for a 36-15 lead. OPSB did their best to climb back, as Vucago and Botitu both touched down, but simply ran out of time, leaving the final score 36-27.

After the game, the SFGG sideline was all smiles and deservedly so after a tough road win.

“One of the keys in the second half was keeping possession and limiting mistakes,” said SFGG captain and scrumhalf Mose Timoteo. “We said if we can keep possession and keep them going backwards, then it will give us the best chance to win.”

For the OPSB perspective, Armstrong said the team wasn’t pleased.

“We beat ourselves today and gave SFGG too many opportunities,” he said. “They’re a very good side, very physical, and they did better than we did at executing.”

NYAC, Old Blue to Clash in Elite Cup
Clubs - Elite Cup / RSL

After a long winter of friendlies and practice games the Elite Cup is finally here for the East Coast, with Big Apple rivals New York Athletic Club and Old Blue facing off this weekend.

There remains little love lost between the two teams, and the prospect of clashing in the crisp air of New York, when those hits hurt a little bit more, is something both will relish.

Old Blue and NYAC are familiar foes. Ed Hagerty photo.NYAC is coming off a series of tense victories, beating Life 12-5 in Georgia, BYU 22-16, and Army 34-31. Those games have also battered the team a little bit. USA scrumhalf Mike Petri is out for the foreseeable future with a fracture at the base of his left thumb. Their two best forwards, James Denise and Brian Doyle, didn’t play against Army, but, along with rested Al McFarland, should play this weekend.

“The game against BYU was a great game and really challenging,” said Doyle. “But we paid for it a bit. It’s tough going out on some of those long trips. When you’re 6-7 and trying to fit into a seat on an airplane and then get out and try to get some rest for a game, it’s tough.”

What is also tough is that the AC isn’t exactly firing on all cylinders. While their lineout looks solid, their scrum against Army was not up to their own standards, and even experience forwards seemed to be going into contact high.

Their kicking game is also a work in progress. That is partly because flyhalf Toby L’Estrange is working on his kicking for the USA team.

“It’s been tough to get enough time to really work on the kicking,” said L’Estrange. “I am working on getting the right rhythm going. I do feel like we’re getting our pattern together, but our individual skills, for each player and for the team as a whole, need to be better.”

L’Estrange also has to get used to a new scrumhalf, as Justin Hundley steps in for the injured Petri. Hundley hasn’t played that position in anger for years, but looked pretty comfortable in his first tilt against West Point and should be fine.

For the AC, their big concern coming out of the Life and BYU games was that the tries they were scoring weren’t so much created as emerged out of mistakes or turnovers from the opposition. Against Army, they created tries in a variety of ways, and despite the fact they don’t have blazing pace on the outside, they score on the wing because they use space well.

Old Blue will be without one of their most dangerous attackers, as Luke Hume is with the USA 7s team. But they do return a group of experience veterans, including Will Brazier, Mark Griffin, Derek Lipscomb, Marcus Respes, Chris Carey, Ben Sadgrove and Dom Wareing.

There’s no guarantee that all will be in the lineup this weekend, and in any event Old Blue will have some new faces, as well. Howard Bishop is a young center from the North of England just out of college. Matt Costelloe is a US-qualified player late of Young Munster in Ireland. Amia Madulaarachchi is a former Sri Lanka U19 player who joined Old Blue via Canada, as you do. With an influx of some local college products and some players from overseas, Old Blue looks to be a little different this year.

But they will rely heavily on their veterans.

Old Blue’s buildup has not been as good NYAC’s. They took two mixed squads to the Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest tournament, which was useful in getting players on the field, but perhaps not quite as useful in nailing down a 1st 15 and a game plan.

Last week, they played Baltimore Chesapeake in a more serious warmup game, and crushed them 79-5.

“It would be nice if the whole season goes as well as that game went,” said club president Quentin Unsworth. “We are pleased with the teams we have. We’ve got a good mix of veterans and new players. We have a chance to play for three national championships, in the Elite Cup, DI, and DIII. This weekend is a big one for us in starting that run.”

Denver Edges Glendale in Elite Cup Opener
Clubs - Elite Cup / RSL

Eighteen points from Taylor Howden and a snappy start saw the Denver Barbarians defeat local rivals Glendale Raptors 33-28 in the first ever Elite Cup match.

The Elite Cup is the offshoot of the Super League, which ran from 1997 to 2012. The Elite Cup will feature eight teams in two divisions leading to semifinals and then a final May 25. Both Glendale and Denver are highly-regarded but are in a tough group with OPSB and SFGG. This weekend’s opening match showed how competitive the games could be.

Glendale began strong and quick ball from their forwards. The pressure put on by the Raptor pack forced Denver to infringe, and new Glendale scrumhalf Shaun Davies was good for three points.

More bad news for Denver as loosehead prop Chris Moreno was given a yellow card by referee Tim Luscombe. The Barbarians defense held, though, and didn't allow any points during Moreno's absence.

With the sides at full strength and Denver attacking inside the Raptors 22, flyhalf Taylor Howden found a crease in the defense and slipped through for a try, which he converted for a 7-3 Denver lead. The Barbarians increased their lead with a 60-meter sideline run from outside center Kyle Hitt to make it 12-3 after 26 minutes.

With Denver back on attack inside the Raptors 22, scrumhalf Tom Staab fed Howden, who calmly dropped a goal to make it 15-3.

Glendale's reply was to get the ball to Dewon Reed. The speedy wing juked his way through 45 meters to score in the corner. Davies hit the sideline conversion to make it 15-10.

Both Howden and Davies slotted penalties before the halftime whistle - 18-13 at the break in Denver's favor.

Glendale opened up the second half with another sparkling run from Reed. With David again good on the conversion, suddenly Glendale was in the lead, 20-18.

But the Barbos reclaimed the lead after frantic work from their forwards. Captain and openside flanker Logan Collins pushed and spun his way over the line for a key try, which Howden converted to make it 25-20 Denver. Howden added a key penalty at 56 minutes, giving his side a cushion of more than a converted try.

But trouble was ahead when they suffered another yellow card. This time Glendale punished them, with wing Dustin Croy just getting over the line, with a little help from some Raptor forwards, to put his side within three at 28-25.

The stage was set for a extraordinary finish and the sides did not disappoint. Certainly the next score would decide things, and Denver got it. Glendale kicked clear of their 22, but Barbarians wing Phil White fielded the ball inside his own half and raced off down the sideline and into the corner to make it 33-25. Glendale got another penalty from Davies, but that was all.

“This was a very mature Denver rugby team out there,” said Barbarians Director of Rugby Lance French. “They maintained possession and didn’t panic. This was a really good game, especially considering our guys have not been able to play because of all the snow."

There is plenty of rugby to play going forward. The Barbarians still have to play Boulder in a DI league game (weather has canceled the game twice), and they face the Kansas City Blues and Denver Highlanders in the next two weekends. Good performances in those games could see them jump to 1st in the league.

Glendale has one more DI league game, this coming weekend against the Denver Highlanders, and could finish 3-1-1 with a victory. It is likely not enough to win the league as Provo has not lost yet.

In the Elite Cup, it’s all to play for. Denver faces SFGG on April 6 and OPSB on April 13, while Glendale plays those same teams on the same weekends (with the order reversed of course).
