Jaime Varano 7s

Houston TX, July 24, 2010 - Twenty teams from around Texas and the Gulf Coast gathered in Houston at the Westland YMCA for the 24th Annual Jamie Varano Sevens. The tournament is played in honor of Jamie Varano, a Houston Old Boy who died in 1986.

The event, sponsored by the Houston Athletic Rugby Club,  included 4 high school and 16 men’s club sides. The Katy Barbarians won the High School Division, defeating a very athletic Westside High School. El Azul (a team composed of Austin Huns’ players) defeated the Katy Alumni in a thrilling men’s final, scoring in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

Saturday’s matches were played in temperatures hovering around 100 degrees. Despite the intense heat, there was some very exciting rugby.
