Men DII College Top 25 Oct. 22, 2009

Sometimes circumstances can be cruel. Rhode Island and Norwich are not bad teams, but when they lose to unranked opponents, and everyone else around them wins, well you have to move them down, and down, and finally they end up falling out.

It’s a tough business, this ranking thing. Miami drops five places from #1 to #6 after losing by one to unranked Dayton. Dayton we move up to #5, but it’s likely neither should be that high. Radford (pictured in front of the castle) moves up to #4, but we are still reserving judgment. Northern Colorado beats Mines well, and moves up a place as a result.

Rhode Island and Norwich drop out. UMass, which lost to Coast Guard, who we still don’t rank, and beat #15 Rhode Island, stays in. In a way it’s the luck of the draw. We think Coast Guard may well emerge as the best of this group. But we’ll see come playoff time.

Northwestern, undefeated in league play, and Vermont, 55-0 winners over aforementioned Norwich, move in

Maybe the MW gets so much love because team actually submit scores. You cannot lament not being ranked if you're not getting info in to the various publications; no person can follow all teams' websites. Plus MW plays meaningful games in the fall as opposed to other territories that focus on spring.

So many comments, College D2 sure is popular. Why such weird MW Love? Northwestern?

College rugby in michigan is a joke. Msu put out B side because they didnt want to lose and have Davenport get put in to the pool and them possibly get dropped. Same with other teams, thats why they didnt play them. Ive played all of these college programs in mens league and they all get spanked ^_-

rugbygr8 @ Wednesday, October 28 2009 2:16 PM Flag Inappropriate
Davenport will beat MSU, I have seen them both play, played with the majority of the players and I just flat out know this man! if they square up, and you are a betting man, I can be reached at rugbyg8@gmail.com.

How is MSU's loss to Davenport even counted when they fielded "mostly B side"? I was at that game. MSU had their entire A side plus B side subs on the sideline watching the game while a combination B/C side played Davenport. These rankings are a joke. Post the truth or nothing at all.

peter803 @ Tuesday, October 27 2009 12:46 AM Flag Inappropriate
Also unincluded is MSUs win that weekend vs. their actual league opponent wayne state 98-7

Couple of facts:Northwestern won on the 1st day of MW in '99. In spring '09 we beat Parkside 49-45 with a weakened team. We also soundly defeated both Parkside and Marquette in spring 2008, both away games. And in MW 2007 we lost to the WI #1 54-26 which is 28 points, not 40.

coochaar @ Monday, October 26 2009 8:45 PM Flag Inappropriate
Why is an unscheduled, friendly match between MSU B-side and Davenport affecting MSU A-sides ranking?

UMASS def Bentley 17-12. Bentley was up with about 8 mins left. Midd actually won 41-0 according to the ref.

Early NERFU results, all unconfirmed: Midd 44 UMaine 0 BU 17 Norwich 7 UVM 37 URI 7 Has anyone heard what happened with Bentley - UMass?

After witnessing the Georgetown vs American game today, I'm surprised Georgetown is even in the top 15.

if by tough, you mean soft. nova? what have they ever done? nada. ever.

turugby @ Friday, October 23 2009 10:30 PM Flag Inappropriate
how about temple? granted not alot of people are fans of them, they are 4-0 and still haven't let up a try.. the only 9 points let up were off bogus penalty kicks, and they have scored 158 points.. They also beat good teams such as Villanova & St.Joes, in a tough EPRU division..

theref @ Friday, October 23 2009 6:14 PM Flag Inappropriate
@Number 8, I predict Middlebury, BU, Bentley and URI as the teams to make it through, and the NERFU tournament next weekend will be awesome. I think that this has been the most competitive NERFU D2 in many years. Midds are classy, but the competition is very solid across the board this year.

Blur11 @ Friday, October 23 2009 5:40 PM Flag Inappropriate
DU has yet to be excepted in to the playoff's. If they do not get a chance to perform against these upper tier teams, where is their room to grow? You would think the scores they put up would have earned them a ticket in to a spot in the playoffs.

98-0 @ Friday, October 23 2009 4:58 PM Flag Inappropriate
MSU played a B side v. Davenport in order to rest for the big game against us (Wayne State)the next day (which ended 98-0, and DU beat us 100-0 in 60 mins.)...Good decision. MSU would have won 30-0 with their B side. Maybe next spring we'll get to see the MSU and DU's A teams square up?

jamie @ Friday, October 23 2009 4:11 PM Flag Inappropriate
No one from Salisbury would ever indicate that Salisbury and Georgetown are evenly matched.

ca @ Friday, October 23 2009 3:40 PM Flag Inappropriate
Midd over UMO by 30 (close at halftime). Norwich over BU by a try thx to rain and no K.Sterns slowing down BU attack. UMASS over Bentley by a try, blowout by UMASS in first half, Bentley catches up, but falls just short. UVM over URI by 2-3 tries, maybe more.

Number8 @ Friday, October 23 2009 3:32 PM Flag Inappropriate
New England, this weekend: UMO @ Midd Norwich @ BU Bentley @ Umass URI @ UVM Any guesses about who goes through to next weekend?

MCsalzalum05 @ Friday, October 23 2009 1:48 PM Flag Inappropriate
Radford-I am going to have to agree with Praterman...PRU is way to low key to be from Salisbury. We are much more full of steam and much higher on our team. Spring will prove the better of the two teams, should definately be worth the wait.

ruggerprop03 @ Friday, October 23 2009 1:31 PM Flag Inappropriate
What about St. John's in Minnesota. They are making their fifth straight Midwest appearance and are looking better than ever. They overcame some injuries to beat two tough teams this weekend. UM-Duluth and St. Cloud state

sharkrugger @ Friday, October 23 2009 12:27 PM Flag Inappropriate
Hey Radford 08, welcome back to d2. Just for the record, Salisbury is up 5-2 in the series v Radford. Salz win 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007 Radford wins 2000 and 2008. It will be a good matchup nonetheless. See you in the spring.

praterman @ Friday, October 23 2009 12:18 PM Flag Inappropriate
PRU doesn't sound like a Salisbury fan, too level headed and unbiased. G-town is probably ranked a little high and Radford is probably pretty good after their very short DI foray. Salisbury looks good but is young.

ca @ Friday, October 23 2009 12:09 PM Flag Inappropriate
CG - didnt make NERFU 1/4's. Last yr they were very good, but inconsistent. This yr they seem to have taken a step back. We shall see in the next 2 wks just how good NERFU is. I suspect they have 10-11 of the best 25-30 teams in the country & aren't getting credit for it b/c they play each other.

radford08 @ Friday, October 23 2009 11:16 AM Flag Inappropriate
Hey PRU, I am guessing you are from Salisbury. Have you seen Radford play this year, guessing not. By the way can not wait until we play you this year.

theref @ Friday, October 23 2009 10:13 AM Flag Inappropriate
CoastGuard did not make the playoffs from NERFU, so they won't be making the NRU rounds, and won't make it anywhere near the Nationals this year.

PRU @ Friday, October 23 2009 9:44 AM Flag Inappropriate
Having watched all of the PRU and MARFU teams this year, I can say that Salisbury and Georgetown are evenly matched this year. I wouldn't have Georgetown so high in the rankings as they have yet to put away any opponents. I also doubt that either Radford or Georgetown should be in the top 5.

deaconpe @ Friday, October 23 2009 9:38 AM Flag Inappropriate
MSU played B side because we had a league game that counted toward play off standings the next day. We didn't want to run an injured or tired A side in a game that really mattered. In hind site we would have played A's because the second match of the weekend was not close.

MARFUFAN @ Friday, October 23 2009 9:11 AM Flag Inappropriate
with salisbury and georgetown having played to of two of the same teams and salisbury beating those teams by more with is salisbury so low or i am ok with salisbury being that low but then why georgetown so high... Just wanting your thoughts

Alex, URI did not lose to any unranked teams. URI beat Amherst college 21-14 and last weekend lost to UMass 32-12. It doesn't matter as this week the playoffs will sort out a whole lot of issues.

midwest college fan @ Friday, October 23 2009 8:16 AM Flag Inappropriate
Why did MSU field a mostly B-side team against Davenport, is Davenport going to Midwst Regionals?

midwest college fan @ Friday, October 23 2009 8:14 AM Flag Inappropriate
Northwestern?? the Northwestern that plays in the Midwest? Couple of facts they have never won on day one in the Midwest Regionals, the last time they were there they lost by 40 to the Wisconsin # 3 seed and they were the CARFU #1, also this year the WI #6/7 UW Parkside beat them. Yet no WI Team?

Sean Robinson @ Friday, October 23 2009 8:12 AM Flag Inappropriate
Alex, could you expand on why the University of Dayton and Miami of Ohio may not deserve their rankings? You may be absolutely correct, but I'm curious to know what you're thinking (since I'm a UD grad). Thanks for putting out the rankings. I really look forward to them.
