Men DI College Top 25, Nov. 18, 2009

Few surprises in the big playoffs this weekend, but there was one – Syracuse over Dartmouth. What can you say about a game that Dartmouth possibly should have won, and ended up losing by one point?

Is Syracuse truly better than Dartmouth? It’s hard to know based on that one game, but our mathematical formula has always ranked Syracuse highly. So we move Syracuse up a bit, and Dartmouth down a bit.

Now … should we bring in Brockport and St. Bonaventure because they were almost as good as Syracuse in the regular season (whoa there Tex, let’s not get carried away). Answer is no. Those teams didn’t produce the competitiveness in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile St. Mary’s jumps in with a defeat of the Santa Monica men’s club. SMRFC has hardly been on the pitch, but still a good result. UC Davis swept Cal Poly and UCSB, so they come in, as well. Rutgers, a team we really like, slips out, but we get the feeling they will be back next fall.

We are coming to the end of the RugbyMag rankings for 2009. After the first weekend of December we will take a break until January.

Yes, 3 teams from the Pac NW is a Huge Joke and demonstrates Alex Goff's Pac NW bias. He simply can't help himself, can he? And, how does Rutgers just "slip out" of the Top 25, with a 1-4 league record? Should have been out a long time ago...

Finally the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic bias is starting to die down, but did anyone else notice there are SEVEN teams from the West on here (including a ridiculous 5 in the top 15)? The West is good, but it ain't that good. Also, 3/5 teams from the Pacific Northwest is a joke - only CWU belongs there.

Congratulations to Syracuse for what I'm guessing is their first trip to the National Tournament. That's a huge step for any club. And they get a pretty good seed (9) as icing on the cake virtue of a strong showing by the NE last year. Good luck against those Southern Cal boys!
