Danny Barrett seems to always be in the middle of it all. The hard-charging Cal loose forward is sometimes a loose cannon, and certainly hard to pin down, but lately he has begun to control his game, and perhaps focus himself more.
Certainly he was a little unfortunate not to be CRC MVP (RUGBY Magazine picked Seamus Kelly), but he didn't worry about that, and moved on to perform exceptionally well for the All Americans on their tour of New Zealand.
That trip culminated in a 34-11 defeat of New Zealand Universities.
"We had to deal with a lot of wet and cold conditions, but it was really good," Barrett told RUGBYMag.com. "We knew if we could get some solid ground to play on, we could score some tries, and that's what happened. Even with all the rain, the pitch we played our final game on was used as a training ground for the World Cup, so it was hard, and that was good for us."
Barrett isn't taking much time off, and is expected to be part of the SFGG setup this summer. He will finish up a final class or two at Cal to get his degree, and then? Well, that's the question. He is certainly a player that someone will want to take a look at, and he does have his eye overseas, having signed on with Nick Robinson, Samu Manoa's agent.
"I can't worry about too much of that," said Barrett. "Right now I just want to play some 7s with Golden Gate and see if we can win some games."
We'll take that.
On the basis of his performance for the All Americans, Danny Barrett is our Rhino Rugby Men's Player of the Week.
