U. Dayton Upsets DII #1

Unranked University of Dayton beat #1 Miami University 30-29 in a battle of the two unbeaten teams left in Ohio Saturday.

Going into the game, Miami was 4-0 in league play, while UD was 3-0, heating up an already hot rivalry.

Miami took control from the beginning and dominated scrums to take an early 10-0 lead. The University of Dayton began attacknig with more success as the half wore on. A sin bin on a Miami flanker for foul play saw UD take advantage and outside center Steve Pangle scored a try to make it 10-7 at halftime. A turnover early in the second half followed up by a long break led to a score for UD's Ben Yost to make it 10-14. Miami countered back and scored in the corner to make it 15-14. UD responded with a penalty to make it 17-15.

Minutes later, a try from UD wing Jim Paszczykowski made it 22-15. Miami again used set pieces to their advantage and chose a scrum on several penalties close to the Dayton line. After several collapses in the corner, the Miami was awarded a penalty try, and with the conversion the game was tied 22-22.

UD edged ahead with a penalty goal, and then Miami roared back with a smartly-taken quick tap leading to a long break, several offloads, and a try. 25-29 Miami led.

With little time remaining, UD managed to win its own scrum at midfield and a chip kick from Paszczykowski took a fortuitous bounce and led to the game winning try with less than a minute left.
