Round one of the Women’s College 7s Championship has concluded, and true to the nature of 7s, a couple of surprises highlighted the opening games.
Most notably, Princeton dropped a 14-0 contest to James Madison. The Tigers were predicted to go deep into the tournament, but this early-stage stumble cast some doubt. But all credit to James Madison, who saw patience pay off with tries from Callie Radday and Caitlin Mundy, and conversions from Stephanie Goetz and Laura Dominick. Another shocker occurred in the Stanford v Ohio State match-up. OSU did well to discredit any notions of underdog status, trouncing the Cardinal 29-5. The Buckeyes’ two most consistent performers – Akua Adu-Gyamfi and Stephanie Bowers – accounted for all five of Ohio State’s tries, Adu-Gyamfi dotting down three times. Look out for these two when all-tournament selections start being discussed. Also somewhat shocking, but for different reasons, Navy got by Northern Iowa 5-0. Only a try from Katherine Smith at the end of the first half enabled the victory. UNI was oh-so-close to tying it up (see Dennis Hawk's photo right) but Navy caught a lucky break. The day will only get more difficult, as Navy prepares for Colorado, which just lost out to Harvard 14-10. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Norwich turned heads during the opening match, defeating Sam Houston State 45-0. Freshman phenom Ally Day kicked off the scoring with back-to-back tries, before teammates Hannah Bell, Vanessa Champagne, Jackie Derocher and Corinne McElroy joined in the scoring spree. Emily Baugus added five conversions. Around the rest of the field, Oregon State impressed with a 24-5 win over Texas Tech, with Hannah Lockwood accounting for nine points on a try and two conversions. And Cal kept Boston College in their own end for the majority of the match, and used that territory to win 12-0. Check out the box scores here and stay tuned for player and coach feedback.
