Men College 7s Rankings Nov 13, 2012 - P
Sevens - Collegiate Sevens

The toughest part about ranking college 7s teams is trying to gauge the importance of how much you play, recent results and the quality of competition.

Wisconsin only participated in one 7s tournament this year, the Big Ten, but the Badgers won it in convincing fashion, beating some good sides along the way, including Penn State. Air Force played in only one true 7s tournament all fall, but won it. Arkansas State has competed in just one tournament, but finished second to Life.

On the other hand, Cal Poly has played in a lot of quality tournaments and finished second to really good teams in three of them. Texas A&M has won every tournament it's played in this fall, four, but not all boasted great competition.

That's what makes this tough, and, in the end, there is no clear cut answer in the quality versus quantity debate. Ultimately, are Arkansas State and Kutztown better than the 11th and 15th best 7s teams in the country? Quite possibly, but they've done nothing to prove that so far this year.

This week we've moved San Diego State ahead of St. Mary's, since the Aztecs won a tournament that included St. Mary's on the weekend and both of the tournaments they've played in this fall.

Cal Poly bumps up to right behind St. Mary's after beating the Gaels in the semifinals of California 7s Sunday. Cal Poly finished second to St. Mary's at the West Coast Invitiational earlier in the season.

Dartmouth moves up dramatically after finally playing in and winning a bona fide tournament. The Big Green b-side played in a small Ivy tournament the week before, and the A-side dabbled in a small event another week before that. But, for all intents and purposes, the Ivy Championships was the first real tournament for Dartmouth, and it won.

Granted, some of the scores were less than impressive. But, the season Dartmouth won its first CRC title, it lost to Brown in the Ivies, so don't put too much stock in the closeness of the Ivy scores.
