After two days and 76 games, eight teams remain in the hunt for one spot in the 2012 Collegiate Rugby Championship.
Friday saw each team play its final pool game and the Rounds of 16, as well as consolation matches.
USA Rugby National Champion Life is still in the running after beating St. Joe's, Buffalo and San Francisco (forfeit) in pool play and Missouri, 19-5, in the Round of 16.
"We made a few turnovers, and a few mistakes after the turnovers maybe kept it a bit closer," said Life's Colton Cariaga of the Missouri game, "but at the end of the day we just wanted a win, and that's what the result was."
Facing Life in one quarterfinal is San Diego State, who has been dominant much of the tournament. Three of the Aztecs' four wins have come by 23 points or more.
Miami and Kutztown have also overwhelmed their opponents. The Reds have yielded just one try in four games, and the Golden Bears two. Both are physically imposing and deep, and both have piled on the tries, too.
On the other side of the bracket, Utah overcame a pool loss to Davenport to oust defending champions Central Washington from contention, beating the Wildcats 24-7 in the Round of 16.
"We didn't play well against Davenport, but we still felt we should have won the game. The problem was, we started out slow, and against a good team that can be a big problem," said Utah's Don Pati.
"I think it's like how you find out whether you're a good team or not -- how you bounce back from a setback. We lost this morning, but we were able to come back. We looked at ourselves and said, it's done, now what can we do to prevent it from happening again?"
The Utes could meet Davenport again in the semifinals, but need to beat UCLA, first. The Bruins edged Cal Poly 22-19 in the closest Round of 16 match in the tournament.
If the rematch is to happen, Davenport's end of the bargain will be beating Stony Brook. The Seawolves have won a pair of close games so far, beating Brown by one and Stanford by 12. Stony Brook also has a loss in the books, 12-10 to UCLA Friday in its final pool game.
The main thing we tried to focus on was the defense. We needed to play good team defense and wrap up on those tackles. We had some good moments, but I think we can do better.
The quarterfinals will be played at 9:40 and 10am, and the semifinals at noon, outside of the stadium. The CRC Qualifier final will be played inside Sam Boyd Stadium at 4:02pm Saturday, in front of tens of thousands of fans on hand for the IRB 7s World Series.
