Late Friday night USA Rugby reviewed tape from the Stony Brook vs. Oklahoma pool game and determined it was stopped short, erroneously, by the referee with over three minutes to be played.

“A situation regarding the official match time of the Stony Brook v. Oklahoma game in Pool D of the USA Rugby Men’s College Sevens National Championship has been brought to the attention of USA Rugby,” said USA Rugby communications manager Jarrod Beckstrom.

“Unfortunately, there was confusion with regards to the official match time in that game. As a result, the second half of that match was not played in its entirety. Upon review, 3 minutes and 47 seconds were played between the opening whistle of the second half and the final whistle. It’s clear a mistake was made.”

Oklahoma led the Seawolves 14-5 when the match was called. Had the game been played out and Stony Brook won, the Seawolves would have advanced to the Cup Quarterfinals. Despite pleading from Stony Brook, USA Rugby has stuck with the referee’s judgement.

“A ruling on the field cannot retroactively affect the outcome of a match or should it require both teams to replay the game. When a match official indicates the end of the game, that decision is final,” added Beckstrom.

“This incident will be reviewed thoroughly and an appropriate course of action will be determined by the event referee manager and the USA Rugby Referee staff.”
