The California Collegiate 7s proved to be all kinds of surprising, as both favored teams faltered in pool play. Cal lost to both Cal Poly and San Diego State, capturing only a 38-0 win over Loyola Marymount to go 1-2. Cal Poly and San Diego State played in a tight battle, which the Mustangs won 19-17. That gave Cal Poly 1st in the standings in Pool B. “Davis did a good job pressuring us and made us pay,” said St. Mary’s 7s Coach Mark Bass. Just as succinct was Cal Head Coach Jack Clark: "It was fun to compete and we're looking forward to tomorrow." “It was a good start to the weekend,” added SD State Head Coach Matt Hawkins, who put aside his disappointment at missing the Pan-Am Games due to injury and put his energy into getting the Aztecs ready. “But tomorrow is the only day that counts, just like with the Eagles. I believe our group of guys has what it takes to get the job done. They just need to believe in themselves and each other.” California Collegiate 7s Day One Oct 29 2011 Action from Day One of the California Collegiate 7s. Michael Geib photos.
