Ref Head Backs Henshall in RSL Final Call

By RUGBYMag.com Staff

Referee Chris Henshall came under undue criticism following the Super League Final, says USA Rugby refereeing head Ed Todd.

Todd contacted RUGBYMag.com to take issue with this website's reporting of Sunday's final between SFGG and NYAC. Specifically, it was the note saying Henshall got it wrong when he ordered a 22-meter dropout rather than a scrum at midfield for a restart that went into in-goal.

"I need to advise you that Henshall was quite correct in Law," Todd wrote, citing Law 13.9(c):

If they opt to ground the ball or make it dead, they must do so without delay. Any other
action with the ball by a defending player means the player has elected to play on.

"If you check the video," continued Todd, "you will see that the SFGG player who gathers the ball does not immediately touch it down, instead he waits for NYAC players to get close before downing, clearly by law indicating that he has elected to play on. Henshall correctly calls for the 22 dropout."

The 22-meter dropout in question led almost directly to a drop goal from NYAC flyhalf Pete O'Brien, in a game decided by three points.

griffsrugby, I stand corrected - I hadn't read the paragraph two paragraphs below the paragraph on the three options of a ball kicked in-goal. Perhaps that's why Chris Henshall is reffing the Super League Final and I'm not!

First it was minimizing NYAC's win due to SFGG injuries n now this. ENOUGH ALREADY! NYAC won n SFGG lost in a great match. That's the story.

And for full disclosure, I've had this same thing called on me twice, the first time well over five years ago...NOT a new law or interpretation.

Actually Joe, the law DOES stipulate it be played immediately. The question is the judgement of "without delay". TECHNICALLY, even waiting two seconds means there was a delay, so it is easily argued that he made the correct call. My judgement while watching was in agreement with Mr Henshall...

(continued from below)... if you watch the video, the SFGG wing arrives at the ball at 1:01:43 and has touched the ball down and passed it towards his kicker by 1:01:45. That doesn't seem like "playing the ball" or a significant delay to me.

Personally (and this is coming from a low-level referee criticizing one decision made by a top-level referee who had an excellent match from first to final whistle) I don't think it was the best call. The law does not specifically stipulate that the ball must be grounded without delay. Moreover,..

Absolutely right. Chris Henshall is one of our very best referee's and while I'm sure he mistakes at times, he'd be the first to admit it. So come on guys, man up and say you got it wrong!

how about a straightforward admission from RugbyMag staff that you were wrong?
