New York, NY - Old Blue won the Met NY RFU DI Championship with a 29-22 win over crosstown rivals New York RFC.

Old Blue went out to a 22-0 lead a minute into the second half and then withstood New York’s comeback for the win.

Flyhalf Wade Kelly, a highly-touted recruit from Australia, accounted for 14 of Old Blue’s 29 points.

Kelly proved his value by accounting for Old Blue’s first 10 points via a penalty and a converted try to give Old Blue a 10-0 lead.

A spectacular try by Levan Shaorshadze increased Old Blue’s lead in the 33rd minute. Attacking inside New York’s half, Shaorshadze lofted a pop kick at the 40, gathered it at about the five, and went in for the touchdown, 15-0.

Old Blue increased its lead to 22-0 a minute into the second period when center Tony Jerram sped 35 meters for a try that Kelly converted.

New York began its comeback three minutes later when big lock Jamie Bouloux crashed across for a try following a penalty at Old Blue’s five, 22-5.

New York continued its comeback in the 19th minute when flanker Harold DeLucia scored from a scrum at the five and Matt Venzin converted, 22-12.

Old Blue countered with a try of its own two minutes later when a clearing kick was blocked deep in New York’s end. Flanker Ian Elliott scored and Kelly converted, increasing Old Blue’s lead to 29-12.

New York drew closer in the 36th minute when flying wing Carlon Fitzpatrick scored a try that Matt Venzin converted, 29-19.

New York got within a converted try following Venzin’s penalty drop goal in the 42nd minute, but time ran out and Old Blue emerged with a hard earned 29-22 win.

I think that even an International team that looses key players to injury has an effect on form.

"Key injuries" ? A true D1 squad would have the depth to cover that.

OB D1 were actually undefeated in the Spring (including beating BIW by 40+) up to the national playoffs where I think key injuries weakened the side.

SL teams can play D1 but not have their records or opponents' records count in standings, or play a handful of "friendlies", or in NE Boston, BIW, OB, NYAC, PAC can play as a "pre-season" n test players for spring...but not field a bogus stacked team n call it D1 n then brag how great they are.

In response to what Old Blue players could do in the fall they could schedule matches against other super league teams like Wolfhounds, NYAC, PAC or they could play Army like NYAC did. What do the other super league teams that don't have D1 teams do?

"Old Blue D1 beat all the other D1 teams in the NRU last Spring except for Mystic, even with a so called weakened team. " That comment isn't true. Old Blue beat Mystic and Wolfhounds in the fall with their super league team to become the #1 seed in NRU and play the Marfu #4 seed.

What are the SL players who play for OB supposed to do in the fall? Even if they play 7's that's still almost 5 months out of the year they are idle. Can you blame someone for playing the sport they love?

Sadders, you might have misunderstood what I was saying, Pops seems to have picked up on what I meant. The issue is not who OB recruit, the issue is having a team earn a playoff spot in D1 with players who won't be playing in D1 Nationals because of RSL. BIW are equally guilty of this approach.

sadders-The chastising is not about recruiting overseas players. OB touts they have a D1 and SL team, yet the D1 team is stacked with their SL players in fall, n then they field a diluted D1 team in spring when those players play in SL. BostonMA has it right.

So much hate towards OB and in particular theref who's comment was comical. NY recruited 4 high level players yet OB is chastised. Anyone who was at the game would have seen one of highest level D1 games in a long time and if that type of rugby doesn't help competition in METNY then nothing will

love these comments....because they are all true

Old Blue don't care about the NRU, they don't even care about the rest of MetNY. All Old Blue cares about is Old Blue. NRU management needs to do something about this if they want to have better representation at Nationals.

I look forward to Old Blue's annual departure from the national playoffs due to sending an under-strength side. When will they learn that this is not good for the NRU.

I agree. Teams like New York, OB and Long Island should not be allowed to bring in hired guns from outside the area. It is not fair and against the rules. Players must be CIPPed to a team for at least 6 months before they can play in an A side game. This would prevent ringers.

Amazing the depth of OB. They bring in a guy from Australia to play D1. Can't wait for spring to see the other players they bring in for Super League, while this guy Wade Kelly stays on D1. After all, OB Super League players are idle all fall.
