The New York Rugby Club secured the #1 seed in the MetNY Division I League with another strong performance under very wet conditions against the Connecticut Yankees.
Just as Referee Scott Reilly blew the opening whistle the skies clouded over an torrential rain persisted for the remainder of the game. New York jumped in front and never looked back with a halftime lead of 27-0 and a final score of 53-0.
"We really didn't play well at all and made a bunch of mistakes under wet conditions" said New York coach Drew Fautley. "We now get a bye week and watch carefully to see who we play in the Championship on October 31. The hardest thing will be to keep our edge without major competition."
Meanwhile Old Blue played Long Island on the field adjacent, and eked out a close victory to pretty much secure 2nd place.
Old Blue did well to control field position and that led to a an early try and then a penalty for an 8-0 lead.
Long Island remained dangerous when their threequarters could gain possession, and scored to put within three. It remained 8-5 until halftime.
In the second half Long Island tied the game up with a penalty. Old Blue scored a try to lead 13-8 and then Long Island scored on the wing to tie it once more.
It remained deadlocked until the final three minutes. As time wound down Long Island kicked a penalty to take the 16-13 lead. Off the restart Old Blue found themselves deep in their end. They got a penalty, Dom Wareing quick-tapped and ran 80 meters, and with defenders all over him lunged over the line for the dramatic 20-16 victory.
To secure 2nd Old Blue needs three or more points (a four-try tie or a win) against Morris next week, or for Long Island to lose or tie Connecticut.
