Denver Rugby opened its spring season Saturday with two victories over the Air Force Academy at Cook Park in Denver.
The Division I Highlanders fought back from a 21-5 deficit to win 45-33 in an entertaining if flawed match, with their heavier pack ultimately grinding down the lighter Zoomies. There were good performances from Jon Taylor and Jeremy Wineland in the back row as well as skipper Tim Guerra at scrumhalf.
In the second match, the Division II Queen City were too strong for the Cadets running out 50-0 winners with flanker Clinton Camp a standout.
Denver’s C-side lost to the University of Denver earlier 23-10. Next up are critical league games against local rivals, the Denver Barbarians in DI and the Denver Harlequins in DII. With both games taking place inside the stadium at Dick’s Sporting Goods, in a new set-up whereby the Denver rugby community is working together with Kroenke Sports to build a larger fan base.
