With temperatures exceeding 100 degrees by 1p.m., the competition in the 32nd Annual Lone Star 7s promised to be heated. And heated it was. This second tournament of the TOLA competition featured two divisions, a 15-team Men’s Open Division with a $500, winner-takes-all purse, and a Men’s Social Division.
The Bowl and Plate rounds were excellent opening acts for the Cup playoffs, with the SPERMS taking the Plate in a hard-fought contest with the Pirates (DARC), and Little Rock defeating Woodlands for the Bowl.
While Dallas RFC and El Azul (Austin Huns RFC) cruised through pool play with unblemished records, the top four seeds in Pool B were very closely matched. In that pool, the Austin Blacks took the automatic berth into the Cup round by virtue of a head-to-head win over Bonobo (Ft. Worth RFC), only to see Bonobo take the wild card spot on points. Seeding ensured that the Cup semifinals included no rematches from earlier in the day.
In a battle of Austin clubs, El Azul defeated the Blacks in the first Cup semifinal, while Dallas RFC outpaced Bonobo on the other side of the bracket. And, although El Azul struck first in the Cup Final, Dallas RFC rallied to finish with a 24-10 win and the first Lone Star 7s victory for the host Club in recent memory. This victory was the second top finish in a 7s tournament this summer, as the boys in red managed a hard-fought overtime win over Bonobo in the season-opening Denton 7s Tournament.
The Lone Star win was all the sweeter for the Reds, as earlier in the day, the Club’s second side had secured the top spot in the Social Division round robin thanks to a head-to-head win over a stout Ft. Hood side. Full tournament results appear below:
