Playing into the New York Night at Randall’s Island, the New England Olympic Development Academy’s first team took home first place and a grand prize of $3500 at the Midnight 7s Tournament hosted by Old Blue Rugby Football Club.
New England ODA got off to a rocky start as they fell to Schuylkill River 15-12 in their opening contest. However, they proceeded to win four straight matches keeping SRRFC as the only blemish to their record. With no playoffs, the best record in pool play took home first prize.
New England defeated several staunch opponents on their way to the title, handing the 12th-ranked Old Blue a 26-19 defeat and edging third-ranked 1823 12-5. New England went on to beat its second team and the Empire Olympic Development Academy, improving their record to 4-1 for the day.
Ultimately, 1823’s loss to New England ODA cost them a chance at first place. Although 1823 also finished 4-1, New England ODA earned first prize through the tiebreaker, which was decided by head-to-head competition. Taking home 2nd place, 1823 won $1500.
Old Blue and Schuylkill River both finished with three wins and two losses. Both fell to 1823, 22-17 and 24-5 respectively. Old Blue defeated Schuylkill River 21-7, giving SRRFC their second loss. With SRRFC’s win over the New England ODA, both teams were left at three and two; however, with the tie breaker being decided by head-to-head competition, Old Blue took home third place and $1000.
