Sixteen regional Women’s teams loaded with US national players and hopefuls came to Campelltown, Pa. for the Harrisburg 7s Saturday.
The DC Furies featured captain and scrumhalf Eli White, a former All-American and MARFU select-side player for many years, forward Laura Miller, All-American 2010-2011, Julie Lau Hogan, another All-American and MARFU selection, plus Jeanna Beard and Emily Miller Glodzik, both Women’s MARFU All Stars.
In the semifinal, the Furies had to get past the Scion Sirens, a new 7s team created by DC Restaurant Owner Joanne Liu and coached by former Penn State Women’s Coach Peter Baggetta, now head coach at high school powerhouse Gonzaga and currently the USA Women’s Defensive mentor. The team is headed by Farrah Douglas, who has 24 caps with the Eagles, and includes such top players as speedster and capped Eagle Ida Bernstein, currently training in Lake Placid with the Olympic Bobsled team and playing middle linebacker on the Baltimore Charm of the Lingerie Football League, Elena Cantora, who played scrumhalf on the Penn State Women’s team that has won the last two national titles, forward Devin Keller, with five caps for the USA, and Carmen Farmer, recently capped 2nd row for the Eagles. The Furies just squeaked by Scion in that one with the final score 17-10.
In the Women’s Final the Furies came up against a team coached by former Navy Head Coach and new and Harvard Head Coach Sue Parker. This team, while wearing Navy jerseys and tended to by Navy’s Trainer, emphasized that it was NOT representing the United States Naval Academy but is a squad preparing to represent the USA in 7s at the World University games in Kazan, Russia later this month.. Their lineup included Eagle Sadie Anderson of Penn State, Lauren Rhodes of Princeton, another All-American, plus several Midshipmen and other top college players. Not daunted, The Furies bested them handily by a score of 38-5.
