A total of eight 7s tournaments take place across America this Saturday, including the first championship qualifier of the summer.
In Wilmington, Del., the Blue Ball 7s Tournament is the first qualifier in the Mid-Atlantic RFU, which is how the region decides which team will advance to nationals. Some of the favorites are the Maryland Exiles and Schuylkill River. Schuylkill River has solid team chemistry and an experienced squad of players. They combine players from the Baltimore-Chesapeake and Schuylkill River clubs to field an impressive 7s team that makes few mistakes. The Maryland Exiles also field a solid team in this tournament. Led by Chris Harvey, this team relies on their speed to create scoring opportunities.
Las Vegas, Nev.
After some time away, the Las Vegas Midnight 7s is back and looking good. The tournament includes some impressive names, including Albuquerque, Glendale, the Sacramento Lions, and Marin Reds. Hosts the Las Vegas Blackjacks and new DII tough-guys Sin City will also play.
Clearly some squads from California and further afield are looking for some tough competition.
As always, the tournament will be played at night, with the afternoon high temperature expected to top 110 degrees.
The Daytona 7s is scheduled to play at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, but it may have to be moved from the pitch to the sand due to the heavy rain they have been receiving this past week from Tropical Storm Andrea. Currently four women’s teams and 12 men’s teams registered. FAU/ Boca looks to be favored after taking the cup at the first tournament this summer, the 22nd annual Todd Miller 7s. FAU/Bocca did suffer some injuries at Todd Miller, but will still be very competitive. Daytona has entered two sides in this tournament, and they look to put together a strong side including all-stars Ben Catania and Roderigus Ceasar.
The Lehigh 7s has also been receiving similar wet weather, but that has not slowed down the tournament as of yet. They have 30 teams registered for this tournament, 12 women’s teams and 18 men’s teams. According to tournament director, Brett Biggs, the numbers have been down this year because of the MARFU qualifier taking place on the same weekend.
Long Island seems to be the favorite, a team that always brings a consistent performance and makes few mistakes.
Fond du Lac, Wisc.
The Lighthouse 7s tournament is being held in Wisconsin with eight teams currently registered, including two teams from Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin, Fox City (also two squads), Madison, Oshkosh, and hosts Fond du Lac. The favorite in this tournament is Madison, seeing that they also just came off a DII championship this spring.
Out in California there is the Ventura 7s being played as well. The favorite for this tournament for the men’s division are the San Diego Aztecs. They are great in the open field and are outstanding decision makers. The women’s favorite are the Lady Outlaws. They are consistently strong and look to keep the consistency going in this year’s tournament.
Johnson City, Tenn.
The Blue Plum tournament being hosted by the Johnson City men’s club and the Molly Pitchers women’s club. They capped the registration at 22 with 14 men’s teams and eight women’s teams in two brackets.
Unfortunately the South Shore 7s Tournament has been canceled due to a venue scheduling conflict.
