A quick look at how RUGBYMag.com did in our predictions for the 2012 Men’s Club 7s Championships As previously reported, we did well in picking the eight teams to make the Cup Quarterfinals. We said Old Aztecs, Old Blue, Daytona, Chicago Lions, OPSB, Belmont Shore, Schuylkill River and the Denver Barbarians would make it.

We were wrong on one, Daytona, which lost a close 12-7 game to Youngbloodz. Youngbloodz took their spot. In picking pool winners we were less successful, only getting one out of four (Old Puget Sound). On Day Two, with the brackets very different from what we figures, we expected to see Old Blue, Chicago, OPSB, and Schuylkill River in the semis. We were wrong on Schuylkill, which faded on the second day, and OPSB, a team upset by Chicago 14-10 in the quarters. We figured Chicago would finish 2nd, we were correct. We figured Old Blue would lose in the semis, and we were correct there. We picked OPSB to win it all, and they won the Plate, finishing 5-1 and losing only a 14-10 decision to Chicago, so we weren’t that far off. We picked Old Aztecs to win the Plate, and we were wrong. Old Aztecs struggled on Day Two, and Belmont Shore ran the table to win it all. And we picked Youngbloodz to win the Bowl. Of course they didn’t, but the team they beat to get to the quarters, Daytona, did, so we don’t feel too bad about that. So give us a solid B+ for Day One, and maybe a C+ for Day Two. For the women, we were very good on Day One, picking seven of eight Cup Quarterfinal teams (again the one wrong pick was due to a close game), and two of two pool winners. We figured Seattle would play NOVA in the final, and it was too close to call. Seattle made it, but to get there they had to beat NOVA 12-5 in the semis. We don’t feel too bad about that one. We thought Berkeley would edge San Diego in the quarters, and instead it was 10-5 Surfers. Overall, we were relatively close (but we also bailed on picking Bowl, Plate etc.) so maybe an A- for Day One, and a B- for Day Two.
