It’s time again for the Cape Fear 7s, the massive, two-day tournament held in Wilmington, NC. The two-day format for the tournament is a major attraction to teams, which can maintain their energy levels a bit more easily and enjoy the Atlantic Coast at the same time. In the Premier Bracket, eight excellent teams populate a competitive contest. Old Blue comes in from New York, while 1823 rides in from Columbus, Ohio. The South All-Stars bring in two teams, the Southern Gentlemen, and the Georgia All Stars also bring in a side. The Navy Exiles are a group of British-based Fijians, reportedly, and could be very tough, while the Kenya Exiles have won this tournament before. Then there is a Pacific Islanders side, as well.
“I haven’t seen a lot of these teams, but we know it will be tough,” said 1823 Head Coach Paul Holmes, whose team has finished third twice in the Midwest 7s Series. “I am pretty happy with where we are right now. We need to finish some things off, but I am not too concerned right now.” Rich Hines rejoins the team for the first time all summer, providing some experience to the group, and Holmes said next week will be the first time he can field his best seven on the field. Unavailabilities and injuries, plus some long trips to far away tournaments, has hurt their staying power. “Everyone has been playing well,” he said. “But the guys have been a little gassed after the long drives. There’ll be no excuses in the last two [Midwest] tournaments, because they will be a lot closer.” In the other brackets, Towson and Charlotte look good in the Men’s Club competition, and NOVA leads the pack in the women. The Charlotte Tigers have the 7s experience from the USA 7s HSRC in June, and should be OK in the HS bracket. Best team name has to be the women’s social team the Molly Pitchers, named after the nickname for Mary McCarthy, who fought for the Revolutionary Army in the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
