Kyle Granby’s rambling run down the sideline won the Eric White Memorial 7s in Springfield, Mass., Saturday for Old Blue, as the New York side beat Middlesex 35-28 in sudden death overtime. Granby, an Iona College graduate and a big, powerful runner, was named tournament MVP. He combined with another Iona product, Matt Cavataro, to help reverse Old Blue’s fortunes after a disappointing Jo Jo Moore 7s a week ago. “We had a good team effort,” said Old Blue coach Sean Horan. “The first time out we still had a lot to learn as we do have a young team, but they are starting to gel now. Kyle played really well. He and Matt are going to go places in 7s.”
Middlesex edged a very solid South Shore Anchors side in the semifinals, while Old Blue beat NYAV 40-5. NYAC player Chris Mattina said overall they were happy with getting to the semis, as the AC was without several experienced players, including Justin Hundley, MVP of the previous week’s tournament. “We won our pool where we beat Middlesex,” said Mattina. “And we played a good quarterfinal to beat Albany. At halftime against Old Blue it was 12-5, but by then we were pretty tired. We had only one sub and could have used the fresh legs. So overall we are pretty pleased with how the guys toughed it out.” Using the 2011 scoring system, NYAC and Old Blue are likely tied for the lead in the Northeast RFU series with two more tournaments to go.
