Canadian U19 Championships Begin
Canada - Men

The Canadian Rugby Championship under-19 tournament kicked off with a bang in Montreal as the 4 assembled teams battled hard on the pitch and two teams emerged victorious.

The first match of the day saw the Ontario Blues walk away with a convincing 40-10 win over the Prairie Wolf Pack. The dominating offensive performance saw Ontario put up 6 tries while making 5 conversions.

The Blues came out determined to exert themselves and quickly rolled to a 21-0 lead before the match was 20 minutes old. Lukas Balkovec, Stephen Seccareccia and Andrew Ferguson powered the quick-striking Blues offense. The Wolf Pack bit back and put up their side's 10 points to finish the first half.

Ferguson scored his second try of the day at the 39 minute mark to open the second half before Jon West capped off the Blues offensive push with a try of his own.

The newly-formed Lower Canada Voyageurs won their inaugural match 31-25 in a tightly-contested battle with the Atlantic Rock. The fifth national region made up of Rugby Quebec and the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union opened the scoring with a try at the 15 minute mark, but The Rock quickly responded - a sequence which would continue throughout the game.

The match saw three ties and three lead-changes in only 55 minutes of action as the 70-minute game was halted due to lightning. The match itself produced its own flashes of brilliance as several players had excellent performances.

The Voyageurs #1, Jon Nadler impressed with three tries, while teammate Shaquille Lattimore managed two scores of his own. Not to be outdone, The Rock's scrum-half Evan Taras pitched in with two tries for his side.

The opening day at the CRC U-19 tournament saw good plays and clear competitive edges as the Blues and the Voyageurs came away with wins. The players will have to continue to showcase their talent and potential as the tournament - a selection tool for the 2012 national U-20 team - continues tomorrow before wrapping up on Saturday.

Wednesday's matches will see the Wolf Pack take on the Rock while the day-1 winners - the Blues and the Voyageurs - square off.
