Well, there are two rounds to go, and three of our top four teams from before the beginning of the tournament are onto the semifinals.
UW-Whitewater slips one spot after falling short against juggernaut Lindenwood in the quarterfinals. The Warhawks gave the Lions their closest contest against a college opponent so far, so they don’t deserve to drop at all.
However, Salisbury was rather convincing outscoring ECU and Sewanee 124-15 in the first two rounds, so the Sharks have earned the No. 2 billing.
Utah Valley made us look smart, winning their way into the semis. We had them ranked ahead of Sierra and Santa Rosa JC, despite finishing behind both in the Pacific Coast playoffs.
Cal State Long Beach made us look dumb, as we didn’t even have them ranked and they knocked off 2011 final four participant Sierra College.
Southern California, it turns out, was a pretty darned good league, which is why you’ll find Santa Barbara City College at No. 12 as the highest ranked team that didn’t go to Nationals. SBCC lost to Long Beach by two in one regular season meeting and tied them in the other.
You’ll notice Central Missouri is ranked behind UW-Milwaukee, despite beating them Sunday. We can’t put too much weight on consolation games, as it’s never easy to tell how many starters were sat on day two or how seriously they took the game after having been knocked out.
But, the Mules do jump up a spot, and they deserve credit for traveling on short notice to the pool of death and competing well, despite having to leave starters at home because they were unable to make the trip with so little lead time to move things around.
