The field for the DII National Championship is full, with two at-large bids being doled out and the final automatic berths being won on the weekend.
The first round kicks off Saturday, with the quarterfinals and consolation games being played Sunday, at three regional sites. The semifinals and finals are Dec. 7-8 in Greenville, SC. The Sweet 16 match-ups are listed below.
Illinois State and Towson were extended the at-large berths. The Redbirds finished second to 2011 National Champion UW-Whitewater in the WIIL Conference, and the Tigers finished second to defending National Champion Salisbury in the Potomac.
James Madison, which is hosting one of the regionals, beat Old Dominion 17-14 in the Cardinals Conference Championship Game Sunday. Colorado College bested UC-Irvine 32-10 Saturday in Irvine, Calif. to earn an automatic bid. Notre Dame College edged Rowan 26-24 Saturday to claim the MARC title. Niagara needed overtime to get a 30-25 win over Colgate in the New York Upstate final. And UNC-Wilmington beat UNC-Charlotte to win the Southern Rugby Conference.
The South region looks to be the toughest, with a recent National Champion in UW-Whitewater, back-to-back semifinalist Towson, 2013 quarterfinalist UNC-Wilmington and varsity Notre Dame College all in the same group.
