It’s a relatively humdrum weekend in DII rugby, with only two matches between ranked opponents. They come in the Gateway Conference, where No. 14 Central Missouri travels to Southern Illinois, and New England, where No. 17 Rhode Island faces off against No. 16 Boston University.
The Salukis won the Illinois LAU last year and Central Missouri won the Heart of America. SIU is riding high off of back-to-back wins to start the season, 27-7 over Missouri S&T and 84-0 over UMKC. Central is seething after a 19-0 loss at home to No. 13 Saint Louis to start the season.
Boston University opened the league season with a disappointing loss, falling 43-10 to 2006 DII National Champions Coast Guard. The Terriers have their hands full with URI, who is 1-1 after a ranked preseason loss to No. 15 Providence and a New England opening win, 24-15, over Tufts.
One conference, the Cardinals Conference, kicks off its inaugural season Saturday. The Virginia-based league has a massive game from the jump, with No. 18 Radford playing James Madison. James Madison opened its preseason with a 34-10 win over DI-AA Shippensburg and looks good. Radford is a two-time National Champ. The winner of this game will be in poll position to win the league.
