Snake River and Santa Rosa play each other for the #1 DII club seed from the Pacific Coast. The loser Sunday will be #2. ORSU plays San Jose for the #3 seed. In Southern California, the Pasadena Rugby Club continued its amazing turnaround. After logging a 3-5-1 regular season record, Pasadena beat higher seeded North County in the quarterfinals, and Saturday upset 8-1 Ventura County 46-41 in a dramatic double-overtime thriller.
Pasadena plays the Old Aztecs for the SoCal title next week. Old Aztecs won 31-19 over Kern County. Both teams have made the national playoffs. Now we just see who is #1 and who is #2. In the Mid-Atlantic, eight teams are down to four: Wilmington ran out to a big lead after 20 minutes and led 29-5 at halftime. They rode that big start to a 34-19 victory over hosts Washington Irish, thanks in large part to a forward effort led by prop Chris Wiggins. Rocky Gorge defeated Brandywine 58-24, while Doylestown whupped Richmond 51-20.
The big upset may well have been Severn River, which went up to Pennsylvania and beat the Roses 31-29. Normally conventional wisdom would have favored the Northern team at home, but Severn River decided to be unconventional.
So who is left? Northeast: Middlesex and Montauk Mid-Atlantic: Wilmington, Rocky Gorge, Severn River, Doylestown compete for two seeds April 28-29. South: Naples, Charleston, Birmingham, and Little Rock compete for two seeds April 28-29. Midwest: Eastside, Bremer County, South Side and Wisconsin for two seeds April 28-29.
