DII in the West is split into three leagues -- the West-Central, Texas and the Eastern Rockies. The Central has two seeds to the West semifinals to be played April 28-29 in Omaha, Neb., while the other leagues only advance their champions. The two West finalists advance to the Chula Vista, Calif. regional of the National Round of 16. Below is the playoff picture of each league. Scroll to the bottom to see league tables.
CENTRAL It’s a three-team race. Omaha (7-1) is in the lead now, but only because it’s played one more game than the St. Louis Bombers (7-0). The Bombers beat the G.O.A.T.S 18-14 in the fall, and they meet again in a huge match this weekend in Omaha. If the Bombers win, they will all but clinch the league. All that would stand in their way is back-to-back losses to end the season .
Tulsa (5-2) is nipping on heels of Omaha and the Bombers, with its only losses coming at the hands of the division leaders. Tulsa gets another crack at both the Bombers and G.O.A.T.S. again, and likely needs to win out to make the playoffs. The Central champion takes the top seed into the West semifinals and will face the Eastern Rockies champ. The Central runner-up draws the Texas champ.
TEXAS It’s also a three-team race in Texas, But only one team will advance to the West semifinals to face the second seed out of the West-Central.
Shreveport leads with 30 points, and will host Bay Area Saturday for its last league game, but a win is no guarantee, as Bay Area beat Shreveport 38-19 in Texas in November. Even if Shreveport wins and bonus points, it can be caught by the Dallas Athletic Rugby Club.
The Knights have two games left, against the Frisco Griffins and the Univ. St. Thomas. DARC beat Univ. St. Thomas 22-12 in Houston in January and lost 41-7 at Frisco in November. If the Knights win out, they’ll win the league.
The Griffins aren’t eliminated from contention, yet, either. But they need to win and bonus point against DARC Saturday to stay alive. They also need to hope for Bay Area to beat Shreveport and a DARC loss to Univ. St. Thomas after Easter. If Justin Boyd scores four tries against DARC, like he did last week against Bay Area, Frisco could well beat DARC, which is the only part of the playoff equation it can control.
EASTERN ROCKIES Glendale already has first locked up. Even in the Raptors fall to Colorado Springs, the only team within reach of their 31 points are the Harlequins, and that’s only if the Quins beat and bonus point against both Colorado Springs and Northern Colorado.
However, Glendale went 1-0-1 against the Quins and holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. So Glendale will advance to the West semifinals to face the top team from the West-Central.
