The Ivy League men's competition starts this weekend with two games, as Harvard takes on Dartmouth and Brown takes on Yale.

Dartmouth is the front-runner again. Bing Guan photo. For Brown, Yale and Harvard, this is the beginning of the chase to catch Dartmouth. The Big Green continues to be the strongest team in the league and they don't look like they're changing soon.

This past weekend they beat Middlebury for the Granite Cup. It took overtime to do it, so it wasn't easy, but Head Coach Gavin Hickie did not have all his top players at his disposal.

One of those was All American Madison Hughes, one of the most exciting backs in college rugby. Hughes took classes over the summer after taking a semester off in the winter, and had finals in late summer. He was also busy with the All Americans (15s and 7s) and so needed some time off.

Hickie acknowledged that Dartmouth players can fall into the habit of expecting a bit of Hughes magic to fix everything.

"There is that danger, so that's why it was so important for us to go out and win last weekend without Madison and some other players," said Hickie. "It lets the players understand what they have to do to put in a good performance."

Other highly-regarded players such as Kevin Clark, big, imposing lock Ryan Galloway, and Pat Flynn, the lacrosse player who took up 7s and is done with his lax college eligibility.

"And," added Hickie, "we're pretty happy with some of the freshman talent we have, too."
