Davenport, Eloff Impress in Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport University defeated the Grand Rapids Gazelles men's team Saturday 61-5 in a friendly.

Flyhalf Jean Pierre Eloff was outstanding on the day, scoring two tries and setting up several more. He started the scoring with a try in the 16th minutes, and Adam Ries added another to make it 14-0.

At the 30-minute mark in the first half, Gabe Gallagher scored a try to extend the Panther lead to 21-0and with less than four minutes to play in the opening half, Erin Hillary found the try zone. Eloff missed only one conversion in the first half and Davenport led 26-0.

Davenport got on the board quickly in the second half as Lance Cavanaugh picked up a Gazelle turnover and sprinted in for a try 30 seconds into the half. Just over three minutes later, Eloff scored his second and then Reece Czarnecki added a try and at the 55-minute mark it was 47-0 Davenport.

Grand Rapids did manage to get on the board to make it 47-5, but Cyrus Turner and Bryan Ray each added a try to close out the game.

Eloff scored 22 points on his own and made quite an impression.

He’s got the potential to make the U.S. team. He grew up with the game since the age of 4 or 5," Davenport Head Coach Kruger van Biljon told MLive. "He creates plays. He knows what angles and lines to run. He’s a quarterback out there."
