In the Midwest-West College DI league, it was Rugby Day at Minnesota, with the sun encouraging as many as 6,000 to the University of Minnesota's TCF Stadium to see the #16 Gophers host #15 Wisconsin.

The presence of so many fans may have preyed on the UM nerves - certianly they started poorly as the Badgers ran in two tries in the first eight minutes.

It was Minnesota's match for the remaining 72, but not enough, as Wisconsin won 19-10.

"We gifted them two tries easrly," said UM head Coach Loren Lehmke. "Wisconsin came out and smashed us in the mouth early, and I think they had played more games under intense pressure than we had. In hindisght perhaps we needed one more tough game to get ready for this one. All credit to Wisconsin, they played very well."

Badger center Andrew Hanske was outstanding, making the gainline virtually every time he caught the ball. His contribution to the Wisconsin effort was huge.

Minnesota dropped to 2-1 after their first league loss of the season, while Wisconsin improved to 2-0.
