Purdue University scored twice late to defeat Ohio State University 22-15 Saturday.

Purdue punished the Buckeyes twice on long-range tries, but OSU Head Coach Tom Rooney was philosophical about the loss.

"We don't like losing but I thought overall we played pretty well," Rooney told RUGBYMag.com. "We were over their line three times and didn't get the try awarded. The forwards worked pretty well together. And we start late - this was move-in weekend for us - so we're still waiting on some players. Purdue competed well, but I like what we've got. We're better than we were last year."

OSU opened scoring on two consecutive tries, one on the wing and the other after a series of forward surges, to lead 10-0. Purdue answered, though, with a try at 25 minutes off clean lineout ball spun to wing John Reynolds. The wing went 50 meters to score. Matt Wagner's conversion made it 10-7.

Wagner then tied the game with a penalty.

In the second half, the Buckeyes took the lead at around the 50-minute mark and looked to close out the match. However, Wagner quick-tapped on a penalty inside his own half and surprised the Ohio State defense, galloping 60 meters for the go-ahead score (Wagner's conversion). 

Wagner was having that kind of game - even mistakes produced good results. His missed penalty kick sailed into the corner and the Buckeyes couldn't cover in time. Senior outside center Kevin Edwards chased the ball down on the far sideline and touched down for a try to finish out the scoring 22-15.

OSU surged on to try to tie the game, but Purdue's' defense held.
