Old Puget Sound Beach got a late try to beat Brigham Young University 34-30 in a friendly in St. George, Utah Saturday.

It was a classic top-college v. top-club matchup, with the younger and more in-season collegiate giving the club players all they could handle. The teams used open subs, but generally ran their best against the other’s best. OPSB Head Coach Justin Fitzpatrick said mixing up the team sometimes shook up their cohesion, but overall he was pleased.

“When we were good, we were very good indeed,” Fitzpatrick told RUGBYMag.com. “And when we were bad we were awful. Overall I thought we got a good team performance. It was good to get out of the cold and rain of Seattle and play here in the desert. I was pleased to see the guys kept playing.”

BYU Head Coach David Smyth, who got to coach against a former player in Pate Tuilevuka, said he was happy to see his players go toe-to-toe against an experienced and physical OPSB side.

“You look at some of the players they have; with Mike Palefau and Miles Craigwell at the back there, you make one mistake they’re under the posts,” said Smyth. “But I was very happy with the game. You always want to win, but we got out of it what we needed. We need to be able to play and compete against team of that caliber.”

Lock Kyle Sumsion, and loose forward and captain Ryan Roundy were standouts, as expected, but also breaking through was flanker Keith Hubert, a former United HS standout back from LDS Mission.
